How Can We Help?

Answers about shopping with us and how delivery works, plus the full policies for our CSF Club. Can't find it here? Give us a call — we'd rather talk it through.

Shopping & delivery

Where to find us, what's in stock, and the two ways we deliver.

Shopping with us

Where can I buy your seafood?

Three ways: in person at one of our two Santa Cruz shops, at one of the farmers' markets we attend each week across Santa Cruz and the Bay Area, or online for pick-up and delivery.

Every market has its own day and hours, so check the locations page for the one nearest you before making a trip.

What seafood do you have right now?

Our current selection is updated as the catch comes in, so it's the best place to see what's available this week. If you're looking for something we carry year-round rather than today, the seafood directory lists everything we stock, in season or not.

Availability varies between our shops and each farmers' market, so a product page will tell you where we normally carry that item.

Do you deliver?

Yes, two ways. On Demand is our online shop — order ahead for pick-up, or get same-day delivery to your door. The CSF Club is a weekly subscription: we choose the freshest catch each week and deliver it every Tuesday, to your door or a neighbourhood drop-site.

On Demand suits you if you want to pick exactly what you're getting, when you want it. The CSF Club suits you if you'd like us to surprise you with the best of the week, usually at a better price.

Where does your seafood come from?

We are the Resident Seafood Buyers of the Santa Cruz Harbor. What we don't catch ourselves, we buy from other local Santa Cruz fishermen — hand-selecting, approving and processing everything we put out for sale.

Buying from us supports the local fishing community directly. Products caught locally are marked as such on their product page.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes — gift cards can be bought online and used at our shops and farmers' markets.

Do you cater events?

Yes, through Shucked Raw Bar — our mobile raw bar catering service. Get in touch through their site for availability and pricing.

CSF Club

Policies and guidelines for our weekly seafood subscription. These terms are what members agree to at sign-up.

Signing up

Can I choose my fish?

Our CSF Club is not an opt-in program, and not one where members pick their weekly selection. What members get each week is whatever we can get our hands on that is fresh, in season, and available in a quantity we can supply to all of our members. To repeat: members do not choose.

As we say to our kiddos, “you get what you get and you don't throw a fit.” Ha — but not that harsh. We like to describe this club as being for the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants seafood lover. Folks who are open to the spontaneity and the grab-bag surprise of this program will be the happiest.

Members can expect species such as salmon, halibut, white sea bass, black cod, ling cod, rockfish, tuna, flounder, sand dabs, soles, ono, opah, swordfish, yellowtail, mackerel, sardines, squid, crab, shrimp, mussels, clams and more. We are happy to work around particular dietary restrictions, but we ask that this is given during the sign-up process — there's a place to make these notes.

You'll know what to expect in your cooler the day before: we send a Monday newsletter outlining the Tuesday selection. We are often working with only one day to prep ourselves. That's the nature of dealing with fresh seafood, and we think it's exciting.

It's very important that we and our fishermen are able to plan, so please don't read the Monday newsletter and then reach out to say you can't eat whatever is on the menu. We want to support your taste preferences, but we also encourage you to try new things — and you can do that knowing we offer a worry-free, no-questions-asked satisfaction guarantee on any of our seafood.

If this doesn't feel like a fit for you, we welcome you to shop with us at any of our farmers' market locations or in the shop, no hard feelings at all. We just want you to be happy and enjoy superb seafood.

Preparing your fish

Every Monday, the day before deliveries, members receive a newsletter outlining the week's selection and the other opt-in products available through our online CSF store. It includes our recipes and favourite cooking techniques.

Your fish will usually be delivered packed in a ziploc inside a cooler bag with ice. Please rinse and recycle or reuse your ziploc bags.

Each fish can be cooked a variety of ways, with different finishing sauces, salsas or seasonings. Have fun experimenting — baking, broiling, frying, sautéing, barbecuing, poaching, or a simmered fish stew or soup. Just remember, the worst thing you can do to a fish is overcook it. Watch the time and check it regularly.

The fish you receive each week is clean, usually filleted, and ready to cook. If it's okay to eat raw, we'll say so in the weekly email. Fish may have skin and bones — as a matter of fact it usually will, because fish have skin and bones. Dungeness crab will be cleaned. We recommend a cold-water rinse and a pat dry with most fillets before cooking.

We work hard to keep exciting recipes coming your way, so please feel free to share any of your favourites with us to pass on to other members.

Freshness guarantee

We guarantee the freshness and quality of our seafood to last at least two days if handled properly. If you are ever dissatisfied with the seafood you receive, we will gladly replace it with an equal portion, no questions asked.

We use the utmost care to bring our customers the highest quality seafood. Fish is a very perishable product, so once it leaves our drop-site cooler we ask that you take on the responsibility of maintaining its freshness. Please be mindful of transportation time, car heaters, and so on.

Many species can last up to five days if transported correctly and stored extra cool — in a cold drawer, or packed on ice. Check the weekly newsletter for these exceptions. Our favourite way to keep fish you can't cook on Tuesday night is in the refrigerator in a bowl of ice; if there's ice in your cooler, that's perfect for it.

Oysters, clams and mussels need to breathe and should not be confined tightly in plastic. If they're in a bag, simply open the bag in the fridge. Smoked fish can last several weeks if the seal stays tight; once opened, consume within two to three days.

We may suggest that more perishable species such as sand dabs or squid be consumed within one day.

Portions and pricing

Our pricing is based on your desired portion size. A portion is enough for one person and is based on a standard restaurant portion of roughly half a pound. That said, we are not half-pound fish-cutting machines — we do our best to get close, but each portion may vary from 0.45 lb to 0.7 lb.

One portion is designated to equal one person. Please modify your order to meet your household's needs: if you have a hungry teenager, or you like leftovers, you may want an extra portion. On the other hand, three lighter eaters may get by with two portions. You can log in and modify your order at any time — nothing is set in stone. The more fish you receive weekly, the easier it is for us to give you a price break.

CSF Club weekly prices by share size
ShareOne mealTwo meals
Single$12/wk (½ lb)$23/wk (1 lb)
Couple$22/wk (1 lb)$42/wk (2 lbs)
Family$40/wk (2 lbs)$72/wk (4 lbs)

Email us for pricing on special orders or events. All CSF orders must be paid for in advance, with a minimum subscription of four deliveries.

Seafood delivery to your door includes a $10 per delivery fee within our delivery range. Addresses outside our range may be considered for an increased fee of $15–$20.

All club members get a discount on purchases at our Harbor Fish Market or farmers' markets — just mention you're a CSF Club member for $1/lb off any seafood item.

Cooler bags and start-up cost

New members pay a one-time $15 start-up fee to cover the cost of your H&H custom cooler bags and an admin fee.

Each member gets two cooler bags: one to take home full of fish, and one that we keep to fill the following week. They stay on that rotation, and each member is responsible for their own coolers. You are required to bring your cooler bag with you every time you pick up your fish.

If a cooler is lost it can be replaced for $8, and we ask that you purchase an additional cooler from our store before your next pick-up day. If we notice it is damaged from normal wear and tear, we'll replace it at no charge.

Should you ever forget to return your cooler one week, not to worry — we have plenty of loaners, or we may pack your share in a gallon ziploc. Just please try to bring both the following week.

Referral rewards

The finest compliment you can give us is to recommend our fish and our CSF Club to your friends and neighbours. For each joining member you refer, we'll add $20 to your credit balance.

Be sure to remind your friends and family to mention you in the “referred by” area of their sign-up. If they forget, either of you is welcome to email us and we'll add the credits.

Accepted payment types

We prefer PayPal and e-checks via the Farmigo system. We also accept Venmo, cash, credit cards and checks.

To pay via Venmo, send the amount listed on your sign-up screen to @HHFishCo. Venmo is not connected to Farmigo, so your credit may not show up instantly in your account.

To pay by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express), email us requesting a credit-card payable invoice. Square is also not connected to Farmigo, so again your credit may not appear instantly.

If you pay by check, please list the name of the registered CSF member in the memo if the name on the check doesn't match one of your registered contacts. Mail checks to H&H Fresh Fish Co., 493 Lake Ave. Suite A, Santa Cruz, CA 95062, or hand them to our fish market representative. Cash payments can be made at our Harbor shop.

Please keep in mind that we cannot begin your deliveries until we have received payment. We'll be in touch if a mail delay changes your first delivery date.

If a check bounces — including e-checks — we reserve the right to collect a fee equal to the amount the bank charges us, plus $25 to cover the cost of arranging replacement payment.

Delivery

Drop-site pick-up

We've arranged with a number of local businesses and residents — our best supporters — to be drop-site hosts for our CSF program all around Santa Cruz and numerous Bay Area neighbourhoods.

The exact address isn't visible until you sign up and become a member, but we do list the general areas where we have drop-sites, along with the day and window for pick-up, so you can decide whether it's convenient. If you'd prefer to know specifics in advance, email us.

Seafood delivery to your door

During sign-up, please leave specifics of where you'd like your cooler if not at the front door. If you'll be away for a while, leaving a cooler out helps — our small CSF coolers are not waterproof and the ice may melt if left out too long depending on the weather.

On the day of your delivery, please leave your empty CSF cooler out so we can quickly swap it for the new one. We're on a strict delivery route, so the drop location should be somewhere we can quickly access, leave your fish, and swim on to the next hungry household.

There is an extra charge for this service, which varies depending on location and distance from the drop-site.

Delivery schedule

CSF Club delivery days are every Tuesday, or every other Tuesday for bi-weekly members. Join the #FishTuesday club!

Our bi-weekly schedule is a set calendar, so unfortunately we cannot accommodate requests to switch weeks. We generously allow store orders, account changes and requests up until 8am the morning of your delivery — we think that's pretty groovy, so we ask that you comply.

By nature of dealing with fresh seafood, we are in a rush on Tuesday mornings to fillet, portion, rinse, bag, pack and load coolers for a large number of people and get deliveries out on time. Stopping for special modifications really throws a wrench in things. We love to be accommodating, but please be considerate of this.

Drop-site capacity requirements

Although we'd hate to turn a fellow fish lover away, if a drop-site fails to meet capacity requirements we may have to cancel that site, or waitlist it until member capacity has been met.

In that event, we may ask members at that site to choose an alternative site, put a hold on their account until it becomes available, opt for home delivery where applicable, or take their remaining balance as credit to use at any of our farmers' market locations or the Harbor Fish Market.

Members can help us avoid this by referring our program to local friends and neighbours — remember, for each joining member you refer you'll receive $20 credit. Consider a rotation where neighbours take turns picking up for each other.

Pick-up protocol

Pick-ups are self-regulated and on the honour system. At your designated drop-site there will be a large cooler stocked with individual member coolers. Find the one with your name on it and sign yourself off on the sheet, indicating whether you returned your cooler bag.

  • If your name isn't on the list but you find a cooler with your name on it, write your name at the bottom of the list.
  • If your name is on the list but there's no cooler for you, contact us immediately and we'll find a solution.
  • If your name isn't on the list and there's no cooler, contact us and we'll find a solution.
  • If you get home and the portion isn't what you signed up for, or an item is missing, contact us and we'll sort it out.

If you forget to pick up, no worries — we and your site hosts are here to help. Contact us to arrange a Wednesday pick-up if needed. After Wednesday, your share is donated to your site host. We ask that members don't plan on a Wednesday pick-up regularly.

It is your responsibility to remember to pick up on the correct day during your drop-site's window. If you don't make it in time, we cannot refund, replace or credit a missed pick-up. If you realise you won't make it, contact us by phone or email before the pick-up window closes and we'll try our best. If we catch you before your driver delivers, we can hold yours back and place a hold so you're not charged.

Please try to avoid making special arrangements often — it takes an enormous amount of effort to coordinate our CSF from procuring to packaging to delivering. A suggestion: get a neighbour or friend to join with you and take turns on pick-up, so you have a built-in back-up.

Please respect our site hosts

Please do not disturb the site hosts who have been generous enough to let us use their property as a drop-site. Our pick-up sites are at members' private homes and places of business; unless you have specific permission, please don't disturb them or press them with questions.

They are not involved in the operation of our business and won't know details about your membership or order. Please respect the times they've allowed for pick-up, and if your site is at a residence, please don't park in the driveway. At each drop-site there will always be a clipboard with our phone number if you need to reach us.

Delivery cut-off time

You may log into your Farmigo account at any time to add extra portions, smoked fish, or other items from our online store.

To get these items on your next drop-off, please order online by 8am on the Tuesday you're scheduled to pick up, so we have time to prepare. You can also call to confirm an order on short notice.

When you place an order online, the cost is debited from your Farmigo credit balance. Special orders cannot be cancelled once they've been filled.

Your account

Your account

Our online sign-up and payment system is hosted by our friends at Farmigo. They handle many locally run fresh food programs and have a quality platform designed to give the flexibility we want for our customers.

On Farmigo you'll create an account where you can track your balance, place orders, modify your order and make payments in a few easy steps.

Our CSF Club operates year-round and you can join at any time. As a member you subscribe by placing your order and paying in advance for one of our designated increments, with a minimum of four deliveries. It then becomes your responsibility to manage your online account. By signing up you agree to pay your account in a timely manner and keep your membership information up to date.

We're happy to help if you get locked out or need a hand understanding the system. All memberships start by creating a username and password for your own Farmigo account — this is the only way to sign up.

Holding or pausing deliveries

Members are welcome to place holds on their deliveries for any amount of time. The sooner a hold is placed the better, so please be proactive if you know you'll be away — ideally no later than the Monday before deliveries.

You can place a hold online or by emailing us. There is no fee. Your credit balance simply won't be debited while you're on hold, and remains untouched in your account.

Some alternatives to consider if you can't pick up your share:

  • Gift it to a friend, family member, house-sitter or pet-sitter.
  • Ask someone to pick it up for you so you can enjoy it later in the week.
  • Ask a friend to pick it up and freeze it for you.
  • Donate your share to a local family in need.

To place a hold, go to My Account, select the Delivery Hold tab, and choose the dates. If someone else picks up your share, please brief them on our pick-up protocol, give them the drop-site address, and remember they'll need last week's cooler bag to drop off.

I didn't receive the weekly emails

Our weekly emails go out on Mondays and Tuesdays. The Monday newsletter tells you what fish you'll receive, information about it, helpful recipes and featured add-ons.

On Tuesday you'll receive another email with any additional information about drop-sites, home deliveries, account balances, and any changes or updates with the club.

If you're not receiving them, please check your spam folder before reaching out. You can also read the current and past newsletters in our archive.

Your credit balance

Once you join and make your initial payment, you'll see it — minus the start-up fee — in your account as a credit balance. That credit is debited each time you receive a delivery, for the amount of that delivery. If you're on hold, your balance is not debited.

On sign-up, Farmigo designates a price based on your share size times the number of deliveries. Keep in mind this credit isn't always used perfectly evenly, because items you add from our online store are also debited from the same balance.

Debits and automatic renewals, for those who signed up for them, happen at midnight the eve of your delivery. If you wish to cancel auto-renewal, please let us know before the next payment processes so we don't have to keep the finance charge our payment vendors charge us before sending a refund.

When your balance reaches zero or goes negative, we'll check in to see whether you'd like to continue. If you're on auto-pay we don't check in, so please remember to cancel if you're ready for a break. We will not deliver without adequate funds to cover your next scheduled delivery, though special arrangements can sometimes be made if we have a history with you.

If you'd like a break but have a little credit remaining, we can send it back to you, or let it ride until you're ready to resume.

Refunds and cancellation

We simply want you to be happy. We ask that members commit to a minimum of four deliveries — one month, or two months for bi-weekly members — but if something comes up unexpectedly, or this program just isn't a fit, we don't mind refunding your remaining balance.

Where a refund is requested, we will deduct the finance charge we paid to our payment vendor from the amount sent back to you. For instance, if you didn't cancel auto-payment in time and decide to take a break after an $80 PayPal charge, we can only refund the portion we actually received after fees, because we're still charged that fee even when we refund. If a payment was a mistake on our part, we absorb the fee.

You're welcome to change your subscription portions mid-season, add or remove optional add-ons, donate your membership, or receive reasonable compensation for any errors on our part that we assume responsibility for.

That said, we reserve the right to refuse service to any member who makes us uncomfortable in a way we deem inappropriate or unprofessional. We pride ourselves on great customer service, but we also have to have boundaries to operate a program like this. Please be patient and kind, and we promise to do the same.

Agreement

By signing up with H&H Fresh Fish Co., I (the member) state that I have read and agreed to these terms.

We want you to be happy. If there's anything we can do to help, send us an email or give us a call — we aim to please.
