Sphyraena argentea

Also known as Pacific barracuda, silver barracuda

An unusual visitor to Monterey Bay—and a rare find in our case! California barracuda is more commonly found in Southern California waters, but warmer ocean conditions, including those associated with El Niño, can bring these sleek, silver fish farther north. It’s a catch we almost never see here, and a reminder that our local seafood selection follows an ever-changing ocean.

Barracuda offers savory flavor, firm, meaty flesh, and large flakes that hold together beautifully on the grill or under the broiler. Try it with lemon, garlic, and olive oil, or serve it in fish tacos with crunchy slaw and a bright squeeze of lime.

For anyone who enjoys discovering something new from our local waters, this is a special opportunity!

Sustainability status for this species is published by NOAA Fisheries.
